On January 22nd, the 'Music across the ocean -- Shanghai Opera Symphony Orchestra US tour' will officially set off. Within 39 days, it will tour to 22 cities covering 14 states in the eastern and middle parts of the US with 4 programs 12 various pieces, including famous Chinese symphony works such as Piano Concerto The Yellow River and Violin Concerto Butterfly Lovers; western classical symphonic music such as Dvorak's Symphony No.9 in e minor, Shostakovich's Symphony No.5 in d minor, Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique; as well as overtures from well-known Italian operas including La forza dei destino, II barbiere di siviglia, etc..
This tour will feature Shanghai Opera Symphony Orchestra's debut in the US. Among the 22 stops, there are famous, best-equipped and historic venues such as the Kravis Center, Charleston Gaillard Center, Anderson Center, Tilles Center, Mayo Performing Arts Center, Ferguson Center, Mechanics Hall, etc.. The long and high-density 'marathon' tour is not only an important challenge to the orchestra, but also an opportunity to train its professional quality and ability.
In addition to performing concerts, with a view to deepening cultural exchanges between China and the United States with music, the orchestra has arranged a number of public rehearsals, pre-concert talks and master classes. Some of the concerts will be professionally recorded, and broadcast on local public radios. 'Cultural exchange begins with listening and understanding. Throughout the 22-city tour in US, our musicians will have a chance to know more about the America and learn to touch different audience by their own music', Xu Zhong, president of the Shanghai Opera House said, '2019 marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relationship between China and US. Shanghai Opera Symphony Orchestra has cooperated with Maestro Neeme Järvi, Lorin Maazel, Daniel Oren, Franz Welser-Möst, Roberto Abbadoa and presents a series of New Year’s Concerts, brass-wind works, chamber music and other brand concerts. As a professional performing group with a history of more than 60 years, the Shanghai Opera Symphony Orchestra also has rich experience in overseas performances. It has toured to Saarbrücken Music Festival in Germany, Saaremaa Opera Festival in Estonia, Italy, UK, France and so on, and has won great reputation from local audience.
This time the Shanghai Opera Symphony Orchestra will tour with its principle conductor Zhang Guoyong, and house conductor Lin Yousheng and Zhang Chengjie. With his unique view of Shostakovich's works, Zhang Guoyong has won great acclaims while performing Symphony No.5 in d minor with the orchestra, and he is recognized as the best Shostakovich symphony performer in China. Lin Yousheng joined in the Shanghai Opera House in 1983, and has grown with the Shanghai Opera Symphony Orchestra for nearly 40 years. He knows the orchestra more than anyone else and is close with the orchestra. The distinguished young conductor Zhang Chengjie is also active in recent years. He was the assistant conductor of John Nelson of MET in the US and Maestro Daniel Oren from Israel. He has conducted several operas and concert works of Shanghai Opera House. This tour not only gathers outstanding artists such as concertmasters of the Shanghai Opera Symphony Orchestra Chen Yangyuetong and Zhang Le, but also invites international prize-winning young pianist Song Siheng and young violinist Hua Hui.
